Liverpool tabled a £109million ($147M) bid for Florian Wirtz, but Bayer Leverkusen is reportedly holding out for £126M ($170M) - that's the current state of play in Liverpool's pursuit of the German starlet.
As we enter the first week of the summer transfer window, this saga is set to reach its climax.
Liverpool has made a club-record offer for Wirtz. The 22-year-old has emerged as a top target after making it clear that he favours a move to Premier League champions Liverpool over Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich, with Manchester City having already admitted defeat.
While reports in the UK suggest that Liverpool's negotiations are ongoing, German outlet Kicker suggests that Leverkusen remain hopeful of securing their desired $170M fee.
Kicker also proposes that one way to bridge the gap could be to include a Liverpool fringe player in the deal. It suggest that one player in particular is a 'favorite' of Leverkusen's, leaving four potential candidates, as per the Liverpool Echo.
Harvey Elliott
Kicker identifies Harvey Elliott as a player Leverkusen would consider as a replacement for Wirtz, citing his versatility in playing as a No. 10 or on the wing.
If the German international is secured, it could limit opportunities for Liverpool's attacking midfielders, as Dominik Szoboszlai would likely step into the role when Wirtz is unavailable.
Harvey Elliott
Harvey Elliott has been linked with a move to several Premeir League sides.
However, it also understands that enticing the England Under-21 star to the BayArena could prove challenging if other Premier League clubs are in the running.
Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Bournemouth have all been linked with Elliott amid doubts over his long-term future.
Jarell Quansah
Another player who found game time limited under Arne Slot in the 2024/25 season was Jarell Quansah.
Newcastle United have reportedly shown interest both this year and last, but currently, Liverpool see the 22-year-old as part of their squad for the next season. A change of heart would be needed to send him to Germany any time soon.
Joe Gomez
Another defender potentially on offer is Joe Gomez, who was on Newcastle's radar last summer but stayed at Anfield to complete a decade with Liverpool.
Joe Gomez of Liverpool celebrates the team's victory and confirmation of winning the Premier League title after the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC at Anfield on April 27, 2025 in Liverpool, England.

Regrettably, most of his 10th season has been spent recovering from various injuries, limiting his involvement in Slot's team. His skill and adaptability are undeniable, but his fitness record leaves room for doubt.
Leverkusen, having lost key central defender Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich on a free transfer and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool, are in need of defensive reinforcements.
Tyler Morton
Last summer, under the management of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen attempted to secure Tyler Morton on loan from Liverpool for the 2024/25 season.
However, Liverpool were more interested in a £20M ($27M) sale, and when this didn't materialise, it chose to retain the academy graduate as backup.
With only five appearances this season and none in the Premier League, Morton's future is up for discussion again, and Leverkusen may be able to provide a mutually beneficial solution.
