On ESPN’s Hoop Collective podcast, senior reporter Tim Bontemps shared that Horford, now a free agent, may be unlikely to return to the Boston Celtics given the team’s evolving roster needs after Jayson Tatum season-ending Achilles injury.
“Al Horford is a free agent,” Bontemps said. “I don’t think at this point it makes a lot of sense for Horford to be back in Boston.”
With Boston’s championship window now uncertain, questions surround Horford’s future. His longtime friendship with Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns makes New York an “unbelievable fit,” according to the reporter.
“Horford is a longtime friend of Towns and has played with him with the Dominican National team for a long time,” Bontemps said.
Horford, 38, finished the final season of a two-year, $19.5 million contract, playing a key role off the Celtics’ bench in 2024–25. He averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 60 regular-season games.
