‘I’m hearing…’ Rio Ferdinand says Matheus Cunha’s transfer poses ‘lots of questions’ for one Man Utd player

The worst-kept secret of Manchester United’s summer transfer market is finally out as Matheus Cunha is on his way to Old Trafford.

Matheus Cunha’s Man Utd transfer is the club’s second deal of the summer after securing Enzo Kana-Biyik, but the first high-profile, bona fide first-team signing.

Cunha is a dream fit for Man Utd and recent activity suggests he can’t wait to get started at the club, with his potential debut on the horizon.

However, as is the case with every transfer, there’s about to be a big loser from it, and from what Rio Ferdinand is hearing, there’s set to be a high-profile casualty.

Rio Ferdinand on Matheus Cunha’s Man Utd transfer

Cunha’s deal to move to Old Trafford had been in the works for a while so it doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

However, the next steps after the announcement will be one to watch, like Cunha’s Man Utd debut date, or how he fares alongside, or in place of, Bruno Fernandes.

While Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho have been the subject of exit rumours, what Rio Ferdinand has been hearing about Cunha spells trouble for Marcus Rashford.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand gave instant reaction to the deal and one aspect of it stood out to the former Man Utd defender.

He said: “I’m hearing he’s taking the No. 10 shirt, which is Rashford’s shirt. What does that mean for Marcus Rashford? There are a lot of questions that will be asked about that. It might answer a few questions about him too.”

It was reported earlier that Cunha had demanded from Man Utd that he be given the No. 10 shirt, and that demand looks set to be fulfilled.

As Ferdinand says, this looks set to pose a lot of questions for Rashford, and answer some uncomfortable ones in the process as well.

Ruben Amorim has moved on from Marcus Rashford

Rashford didn’t even have as successful a loan as Man Utd’s rivals would have you believe but even if he did, it couldn’t be clearer that Ruben Amorim has moved on from him.

Fabrizio Romano reported recently that Rashford had played his last game for Man Utd, and unlike the case of Sancho, who’s never worked with Amorim, or Antony, who impressed at Betis, there are no mitigating factors for his return.

Giving his No. 10 shirt to the new signing will be the ultimate indictment of where he stands with the current Man Utd management.

A player whose professionalism was already under the scanner is unlikely to take too kindly to this move, and any remaining chance of a reunion at Old Trafford is now firmly in the mud.

It’s set to be a sad and unfortunate end to the Man Utd career for a player who came through the ranks and was Manchester through and through.
