Alan Shearer warns Manchester United transfer targets will rethink Old Trafford switch

The Premier League season finished last week and Man Utd finished 15th in the table following a joyless campaign.

Alan Shearer believes Manchester United targets will have to "think long and hard" about joining the club this summer.

United have just suffered the worst season in the club's modern history, but Ruben Amorim remains in charge and will strengthen his squad in the summer transfer window.

The £62.5million signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves was announced on Sunday afternoon, subject to visa approval. Cunha's transfer will become official when he returns from international duty with Brazil and United will now turn their attention to other targets in the market.

Liam Delap has decided to join Chelsea, which rules him out this summer. Victor Osimhen continues to be linked with an Old Trafford move, but his wage demands could be a stumbling block.

United will sign a new striker in the summer window, although Shearer has warned transfer targets will be forced to seriously think about moving to Manchester after a disastrous season.

Shearer told Betfair: "It won't be difficult for Man United to improve on this season's performances and perhaps that's what Ruben Amorim was meaning when he was speaking on the pitch after their final game.

"Do good days mean challenging for the top six? Can Man United do that? There is a huge amount of work to be done at Old Trafford. We've said how desperate they've been and how poor the season was and there's a lot of work to be done in terms of shipping players out and getting players in.

"Who they sell, I don't know. If they need to raise funds then they have a couple of options to do that.

"Man United need an overhaul but it won't happen in one or two transfer windows and that's why, as a player, you have to think long and hard about needing or wanting to go there because it's going to take two or three years to get anywhere near the levels to challenge for the top six again.

"If funds are going to be tight due to PSR then their assets in Garnacho and Fernandes may have to be sold to bring funds in. Nothing surprises me with Man United on or off the field anymore because they've been an embarrassment over the last 12 months."

Shearer dished out his own awards for the Premier League season and United won the 'biggest disappointment' prize. "When you look at the state of Man United - I don't think anyone saw them finishing where they did or being as bad as they have been on or off the pitch," he added.

There will be no European football at Old Trafford next season after defeat in the Europa League final. That is a financial blow, but it will give Amorim more time on the training ground.

Speaking after the Aston Villa victory, Amorim promised the "good days were coming" at United.
