Jeremie Frimpong once voiced everything he wanted to achieve in his career as a teenager, showing exactly why he joined Liverpool and how he has become a top player in recent years. The Reds completed their signing of the wing-back from Bayer Leverkusen last week after triggering his £29.5million release clause.
The Netherlands international signed a five-year deal with the newly-crowned Premier League champions. He is considered a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was confirmed as a Real Madrid player just hours before Frimpong’s announcement, offering competition at right-back for Conor Bradley.
Under compatriot Arne Slot’s tutelage, the 24-year-old will look to reach new heights after twice being named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season. Frimpong rose to stardom by playing an integral role in Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side, completing an unbeaten domestic double in 2023/24, where he notched 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 games.
His arrival at Anfield marks a return to English football after leaving Manchester City six years ago, having joined the Etihad club aged 10 but failing to make it into the first team. He went on to sign for Celtic in September 2019, enjoying an 18-month stint before a move to Leverkusen in January 2021.
And it was during his time in Scotland that Frimpong showcased his ambitious mindset which has got him to this point. Aged 19, he announced to the world that he wanted to win football's biggest individual and team accolades, demonstrating exactly the kind of player Liverpool now have in their ranks.
Frimpong told the Mail in 2019: “I want to be the best player there is. I want to play for the biggest team ever. I want to win the Champions League. I want to hold the World Cup. I want to win as many trophies as I can.”
Frimpong already has Scottish Premiership and Bundesliga titles to his name. Helping Slot’s men defend their Premier League crown and achieve European glory would no doubt take him several steps towards fulfilling his dreams.

Even at Celtic, Frimpong wanted to become the best player in the world and win the biggest trophies
Liverpool’s current Dutch contingent, which includes Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, will no doubt help Frimpong settle in on Merseyside. He even admitted he looked up to his Netherlands team-mate and Reds skipper Van Dijk back in his Celtic days.
Frimpong said at the time: “Look at Virgil nan Dijk. There's the example. Played for Celtic; four years later, he nearly wins the Ballon d'Or at Liverpool. He was so close. So can I be the best player there is? Yeah, I think I can be.”
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com for the first time as a Red, Frimpong said: “It (the transfer) went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer.
Liverpool have already completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong before the transfer window officially opens.
