Report: How Wolves privately feel about Matheus Cunha’s early transfer to Man United

Matheus Cunha is no longer a Wolves player after the forward completed his move to Manchester United.

There is some relief in the West Midlands, as after a tedious transfer saga, Cunha has left Vitor Pereira’s project.

Man United paid the £62.5m release clause to sign Cunha, a clause that was inserted into the Brazilian’s contract during the January transfer window.

After two-and-a-half years, 33 goals and 15 assists, the 26-year-old will leave Molineux with his head high, but Wolves’ stance on his exit might surprise some.

Wolves’ stance on Matheus Cunha’s transfer emerges

Some Wolves fans had grown tired of Cunha, with the relationship between the attacker and supporters becoming jaded back in March.

Cunha revealed that he planned to leave Wolves in the summer transfer window, a decision that did not go down well with fans, particularly amid a relegation battle.

Though the Brazil international was Wolves’ top scorer over the 2024/25 campaign and was voted Players’ Player of the Season, the Old Gold were ‘happy’ to see the back of him.

That’s according to Sky Sports, who, when reporting Cunha’s departure, revealed Wolves’ stance on his swift exit.

It’s understood that ‘Wolves are happy’ that their number ten’s transfer has gone through ‘as quickly as possible’, with the deal announced shortly after Cunha was spotted in Manchester.

Sky added that ‘nobody at Wolves’ wanted the saga to be dragged out into the summer, with the idea behind the scenes always being that the superstar would leave at the earliest instance.

The club stood firm by keeping the 26-year-old on side in January amid interest, getting what they could out of the Brazilian before his tenure at Molineux ended.

When Cunha will meet the Man United squad

Though the deal has been announced, Cunha is yet to get a taste of his new surroundings.

While Man United bring their disastrous tour of Asia to a close, Cunha has joined up with the Brazilian national team for the first fixtures under Carlo Ancelotti’s reign.

Following the international break, the former Wolves ace will complete his transfer to United, where he will meet up with his new teammates and Ruben Amorim.

For Wolves, his exit was a long time coming, and hopefully, such will be reflected by how the Old Gold conduct themselves in the transfer window, with a worthy replacement required.
