Town announce 2025 summer retained list following Premier League relegation

It brings formal confirmation that midfielder Massimo Luongo, a key man during back-to-back promotions, has been released. Blues boss Kieran McKenna recently explained his decision to let the 32-year-old - hailed as 'possibly the best free agent signing ever' - move on.

Marcus Harness has also been released, the Blues not taking up their option to extend his deal by 12 months. The versatile attacker arrived from Portsmouth for a £600k fee in 2022, with Joe Pigott moving in the opposite direction on loan. He went on to score 12 goals in 38 starts and 51 sub appearances for the club and spent the season just gone on loan at Championship strugglers Derby County.

Town have, however, taken up their 12 month extension option in Elkan Baggott's contract. The 22-year-old left-footed centre-back recently earned praise from manager Steve Bruce after an injury-hit season on loan at League One club Blackpool. The Indonesian international, who came through the Playford Road system, has now had five spells away.

Meanwhile, defensive duo Axel Tuanzebe and Cameron Burgess both remain in talks over new deals.

Tuanzebe was one of the Blues' better performers in 2024/25, but a freak thumb injury and subsequent hamstring set-backs limited him to 20 league starts.

"If Axel can stay a part of the team, part of the club, then I'd certainly be very happy with that," said McKenna, speaking in April.

"But he's entitled to consider his future at this point of his career, and the club is entitled to do the same."

Burgess, a key man during back-to-back promotions, made 16 Premier League starts and now finds himself vying with £15m signing Jacob Greaves for a starting spot.

"I think, irrespective of whatever happens in the summer, Cameron's always going to go down in the folklore of this club now," said McKenna.

"He's someone who we think is very important and if it's the right thing for him and his career to stay and be part of it next year, then I'd certainly be more than happy with that from my perspective and would want to have him around.

"But he has his right to explore his options and I think it's right that he does that. The club also has their right to make the offers that they see best fit."

Loan quartet Ben Godfrey (Atalanta), Kalvin Phillips (Man City), Jens Cajuste (Napoli) and Julio Enciso (Brighton) return to their parent clubs.

McKenna has said he'd like to keep Swedish midfielder Cajuste at the club, but conceded 'there's probably a lot to do for that to happen'.

Along with Baggott, Harry Clarke (Sheffield United), Cameron Humphreys (Wycombe) and Ali Al-Hamadi (Stoke) all return from loan spells away.

As it stands, Ipswich have 10 players now heading into the final year of their contracts.
