Chelsea have initiated serious negotiations with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of winger Jamie Gittens. They will most likely complete the deal prior to the forthcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The Blues are willing to match Dortmund’s estimate of around £50 million for the 20-year-old England Under-21 international.
Gittens began his development in the junior ranks at Cobham before moving to Manchester City and subsequently Dortmund. He has been eyed by some of Europe’s top clubs, including Arsenal. The Blues are, however, at the forefront in terms of luring him to their fold currently.
The winger enjoyed a goal-laden 2024–25 campaign, netting a total of 12 goals and delivering five assists in 48 games. Dortmund’s willingness to sell Gittens stems from financial considerations and the player’s desire for a new challenge. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl has acknowledged the club’s need to reduce wages and has hinted at potential departures.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Gittens is also part of their strategy to restructure the team under manager Enzo Maresca. They have already finalised the signing of striker Liam Delap and are keen to reinforce the wings as there are doubts about Jadon Sancho and Mykhailo Mudryk’s futures.
The Blues’ and Dortmund’s talks can also involve midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who has had an excellent loan stint in Germany. There is a speculated exchange deal that involves Chukwuemeka moving to Dortmund on a permanent transfer and Gittens moving to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea Continue Squad Rebuild This Summer
The Blues have started to make moves for the transfer window with the squad rebuild in the mind of Enzo Maresca and the Stamford Bridge hierarchy. They have already made three signings: Estevao from Palmeiras, Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon, and Kendry Paez from Independiente del Valle.
The Blues will also sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap on a £30 million contract. He has already agreed on personal terms and will undergo a medical at Cobham within the next week. The Blues have also approached Borussia Dortmund for Jamie Gittens, which could be completed in the coming weeks.
