Middlesbrough are dealt transfer blow as Premier League deal is 'off the table'

Doak spent last term on loan at the Riverside, with his temporary spell with the Teessiders proving a huge success.

The 19-year-old made a positive impact in the first half of the season, scoring three goals and claiming seven assists as his direct running down the right-hand side formed a major part of [Boro](http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/football/middlesbrough)’s attacking threat.

His season was prematurely curtailed when he suffered a thigh injury in late January though, and while it was initially hoped he would be able to return to action before the end of the campaign, he remained sidelined as Boro’s form nosedived, culminating in their failure to finish in the top six.

While Liverpool boss Arne Slot has spoken glowingly about Doak’s development on a number of occasions, it was always going to be difficult for the Scotland international to break into the Premier League champions’ starting line-up on a regular basis next season.

As a result, Boro officials had been hoping that Slot and the rest of the Anfield hierarchy might have been willing to consider another Championship loan move next term. In such a scenario, the Teessiders would have backed themselves to be at the front of the queue for Doak’s signature.

However, sources now claim Liverpool are willing to consider a permanent deal for Doak this summer, which would effectively end any hope of Boro re-signing the winger on loan.

Everton are reported to be extremely interested in a deal for Doak, and while it would be extremely unusual for a player to cross the Merseyside divide, the Toffees are ready to commit around £30m to the pursuit of the youngster.

Crystal Palace have held talks over Doak in the past, and the Eagles are believed to remain interested. Palace can offer European football after qualifying for the Europa League, and would potentially be an attractive option for Doak given their proven track record for helping develop young attackers.

Boro will continue to monitor the situation, but will almost certainly have to look elsewhere as they attempt to strengthen their wide-attacking ranks ahead of the start of next season.
