Report: Newcastle now moving to sign £44m striker after missing out on Liam Delap, compared to Edinson Cavani

Eddie Howe wants to bring a striker to Newcastle this summer, but there has already been a setback.

Newcastle were keen to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich after his incredibly enticing £30m release clause became active in the event of relegation from the Premier League.

A story from iNews even claimed that Eddie Howe is willing to change his formation to accommodate the Englishman.

However, Chelsea are now close to signing Delap – a development which has prompted Newcastle to turn attention towards Moise Kean instead.

Newcastle showing serious interest in Moise Kean

Calciomercato now report that Newcastle are very keen to sign the Italy international.

Kean – who has been likened to Edinson Cavani – just enjoyed the best goalscoring campaign of his career, netting 25 goals in 44 appearances for Fiorentina last season.

Calciomercato believe this electric form has alerted Newcastle, who are said to be ‘moving with greater determination’ to sign the Italian, although Napoli have also enquired about the 25-year-old.

The Fiorentina No.20 has a €52m (£44m) release clause active in his contract until July 15th.

Raffaele Palladino has also left his role as manager at Fiorentina, a development Calciomercato say represents a blow for the Serie A side’s hope of keeping Kean in Florence.

Eddie Howe could face competition from Manchester United

If Howe really is keen to sign the Vercelli-born striker, Newcastle ought to submit an offer immediately.

SportMediaSet recently claimed that Manchester United are ready to activate Kean’s release clause after disappointing seasons for Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who scored a combined total of six Premier League goals last term.

Having said that, Newcastle can offer the Fiorentina talisman UEFA Champions League football, whereas Ruben Amorim has no European football to offer his targets, so Kean himself may feel obliged to wait and explore his options, regardless of who triggers the clause first.
