Everton appear to be on the verge of agreeing a lucrative contract with one midfielder.

Everton are looking to kickstart life at the Hill Dickson Stadium with more optimism than they’ve had in a long time.

The Toffees experienced a resurgence after David Moyes returned to Goodison Park, picking up 31 points from their final 19 league games, compared to 17 in the first half of the season.

Everton are hopeful that they can push on, and with significant funds being afforded to Moyes to strengthen the squad, they have already made progress in securing a key midfielder.

Idrissa Gueye set for bumper deal worth more than £13m

Everton recently announced the release of four players, but Gueye was not included in the list despite his contract expiring this summer.

The Senegal international has remained a key player, and as reported by Fabrizio Romano (29 May), is set to sign a new two-year deal with the Toffees.

Despite being 35 years of age, the veteran midfielder has shown no signs of slowing down, starting in all but three of Everton’s Premier League fixtures last season.

His importance to the club has arguably grown, and ex-Goodison scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – believes he will likely sign an improved deal worth as much as £125,000-a-week.

“He’s got to be earning more than £100,000 a week,” King said.

“I’d imagine he will be earning around £125,000 a week with this new contract; I would think that is the amount of money which would be needed to convince him to stay.

“He was probably earning about £80,000 a week before that. It is a frightening amount of money, but this is the sort of money that is being brandished around now. This is a good move for Everton to keep an experienced midfielder around.

“However, I know Everton are cautious with the amount of money they pay, and I know that Moyes likes to have full control.”

Everton must rejuvenate the squad this summer

One of the tasks facing Moyes will be to rejuvenate his squad, which had the second-highest average age in the Premier League this season.

Three of the four players they released were in their thirties, but with Gueye set to stay, the Scotsman will need to bring in more energy to complement the 2021 AFCON winner.

The permanent signing of Carlos Alcaraz and the approach to sign Manchester City’s James McAtee point towards the right direction, but the club will have to target more youth to significantly freshen up the squad.
