Udinese defender set for talks with Manchester United

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United rebuild is gaining momentum following the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish.

The Red Devils have already confirmed the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are now aggressively pursuing reinforcements to fix their shaky defence.

With both Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans having left the club this summer, centre-back depth has become an urgent priority at Old Trafford.

United’s shift to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system means new signings must be comfortable in a back three – something the club is factoring into their recruitment strategy.

And with preseason plans already in motion, United want their next targets secured swiftly before flying out for the club’s summer tour.

One of the names at the top of their defensive shortlist is Oumar Solet – the towering 6ft 3in centre-back currently shining in Serie A for Udinese.

Oumar Solet, 25, only joined Udinese from Red Bull Salzburg in January but has already made a major impact, making 19 appearances and chipping in with a goal and two assists.

According to Messaggero Veneto, Manchester United are now in talks with Udinese over a potential deal for the French defender, who is reportedly open to a step up in his career.

The report claims Oumar Solet is ‘likely to leave’ this summer, with Udinese prepared to cash in and United keen to agree a fee early in the window.

A price tag of around €40million (£34m) has been set – a figure that United may be willing to match to bolster Amorim’s defence.

Solet, a former Lyon and France U20 player, is regarded as a composed ball-playing centre-back, capable of breaking lines with dribbles and progressive passes.

Football insiders have described him as tailor-made for Amorim’s system and United’s future plans.

However, the Red Devils could face competition from West Ham and Bournemouth, who have also expressed interest in the player.

Italian agent Claudio Pasqualin suggested Udinese are willing to sell but warned that any rushed approach could complicate negotiations.

United, however, are not wasting time, and Solet could become the club’s next major signing in what’s shaping up to be a busy summer at Old Trafford.
