Steelers not interested in trade for Pro Bowl tight end, insider says

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not interested in a trade for Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith, according to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly.

“They are not interested in him,” Kaboly said on 93.7 the Fan.

Smith wants a reworked contract. He is scheduled to make $4.8 million this season but would like that number to be increased. If the Steelers did land Smith, it would come with a new deal. Schefter says Smith would like to stay in Miami.

Smith was a Pro Bowl selection in 2024 for the first time in his career. He set career-highs last year with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in the Dolphins offense. All of those marks were franchise records.

Smith, 29, will turn 30 in August. He and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith have many connections throughout history. In Tennessee, the player-coach duo worked together for four seasons from when Arthur Smith was a tight ends coach to when he took over as the team’s offensive coordinator. Jonnu joined Arthur in Atlanta for one season, too.

During those years, Jonnu Smith progressively became a more prominent part of the offense, putting up consecutive 400-yard seasons with Arthur Smith as the offensive coordinator.

It is unknown how much Smith would like to be paid, but Miami does not seem interested in paying him what he wants, and the Steelers would have to meet that asking price. They signed Pat Freiermuth to a new deal last year, and he is under contract through the 2028 season.
