Considering PSR has limited our spending for several years now, I can’t help but wonder how on earth Chelsea keep getting away with it.
The Blues’ net spend since 2022/23 is over £300m more than any other Premier League club. In that period, Newcastle United have spent £344m, while Chelsea have shelled out a whopping £1.3bn.
Todd Boehly is stockpiling players and there is no sign of them facing financial consequences, with another £50m winger now linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are in talks to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.
They report that Enzo Maresca is keen to have the 20-year-old for the upcoming Club World Cup; a summer event that will see the transfer window close for just under a week on June 10th.
It’s not clear if Newcastle were ever planning to make a move, but The Mail’s Craig Hope did reveal last month that Toon scouts have been in Germany to take a close look at the England Under-21 international, along with Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Either way, it looks like Chelsea plan to add yet another £50m winger to their ranks, just days after winning the race to sign Ipswich’s Liam Delap.
Delap held talks with Newcastle over a potential move to St James’ Park, with Man Utd and Everton also keen, but opted to join former Man City youth coach Enzo Maresca in London.
Noni Madueke was linked with a possible move to St James’ Park last summer, but instead stayed at Chelsea and went on to play 32 times in the Premier League last season, scoring 11 times in all competitions
Today, in light of news that Gittens could arrive, The Guardian report that the former PSV winger could depart.
It’s thought his development has ‘stalled’, leaving Chelsea chiefs ready to sanction his sale if a decent offer comes.
Personally, I’ve never seen Madueke as an obvious fit for an Eddie Howe side. He can play down both flanks, has pace and quick feet, but I’ve often been unimpressed by his work rate, which is a non-negotiable for any wide man coming into this side.
