With offseason activities in full swing, it is never too early to start talking about the state of the San Francisco 49ers' roster, especially when looking at those last, few coveted spots we'll ultimately be talking about more in August.
Right now, though, there aren't a whole lot of people talking about the likes of a final linebacker spot on this roster, but that's exactly what 2024 seventh-round pick Tatum Bethune is staring down.
He might not make this roster just one year after being drafted.
Tatum Bethune has an uphill battle to make this 49ers roster
Bethune suited up for 11 games as a rookie and played over 50 percent of special teams snaps, which helps build a strong case for why he should stick around. However, the 49ers added a few other linebackers to the mix this offseason.
San Francisco drafted Nick Martin out of Oklahoma State in the third round this year. They also signed a pair of free agents in Luke Gifford and Chazz Surratt. While these three all play different linebacker positions, that's also what makes things even more interesting for Bethune.
Currently, Bethune is likely slotted in as third on the middle linebacker depth chart behind Fred Warner and Surratt.
But, what are the chances the 49ers actually keep Bethune? How many linebackers will this team hold onto?
It would be hard to picture the Niners letting go of a guy they just drafted a year ago and who played a large role on special teams last year. But, this is a team that spoke loudly with their actions.
Don't forget, the 49ers also brought in undrafted free agent Stone Blanton (although he'll likely slot in on the weak side).
So much is made about the bigger names and the more intriguing roster battles, but Bethune did see the field often last year and this 49ers team very well could wind up moving on from him over the course of the summer.
At the very least, one might hope the team gets a chance to keep him around on the practice squad if he is truly the last one off the final roster.
