Liverpool remain confident they can get a deal for Florian Wirtz over the line despite seeing initial bids rejected, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League champions hope to secure the signing of the Bayer Leverkusen star early in an effort to show their intent ahead of the new campaign.

Sources have told Football Insider that negotiations are still taking place regarding the 22-year-old’s transfer fee, with an opening bid of £110million rejected by the Bundesliga outfit.

Had it been accepted, it would have been one of the finishing touches to a club-record deal.

The Anfield hierarchy is hugely optimistic that a deal can be agreed, with a willingness from all parties to see the Germany international move – but Leverkusen will hold out for the right price.

Having registered 10 goals and 12 assists in the German top flight last season, Liverpool’s meeting with Wirtz and his family is understood to have swayed his decision to join the Reds in what would be a club-record deal.

While a transfer of this magnitude was never going to be clear-cut given the finances involved, positive noises from both sides suggest an agreement is close.

The clubs are still haggling over the finer details, but Wirtz himself is keen to finalise the deal in a timely manner following the opening of the summer transfer window yesterday (1 June).

Liverpool have already secured the services of right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen and club bosses are keen to get their big business deals wrapped up early.

Meanwhile, Liverpool could also have the Premier League’s best left-back in their ranks after Milos Kerkez’s performances for Bournemouth were recognised.

Arne Slot‘s mission to upgrade several positions this summer are set to see both full-back spots undergo wholesale changes.

The English champions have yet to make a formal approach to Bournemouth for the £45million-rated defender, but are expected to complete a deal in the coming weeks as part of their early-window spending spree.
