Contract negotiations between James Cook and the Buffalo Bills have been the talk of the offseason. The future between the two seems murky, at best.
Cook is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is extension eligible. Yet, the two sides seem far apart on terms, and Cook could potentially be headed towards a holdout. Cook is the lone Bills player yet to have appeared at OTAs in Orchard Park.
Even if Cook does finish out his rookie contract, there's no guarantee he'll be back in Buffalo in 2026, which would lead the Bills to potentially replace Cook in the 2026 NFL Draft.
In the latest mock draft from Pro Football and Sports Network's Ian Cummings, Cummings predicts the Bills will replace Cook in the second round - the same round Cook was selected - with Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner.
"If the Bills opt not to extend James Cook and instead dip into the 2026 NFL Draft RB crop, Quintrevion Wisner can be a viable successor," Cummings wrote. "At 6’0″, 200 pounds, Wisner’s elusive instincts, space-swimming ability, and base recalibration post-contact make him unique."
Wisner made his mark in his sophomore season, after taking just 12 carries as a freshman. In 2024, Wisner took 226 carries for 1,064 yards and five touchdowns. Wisner isn't just proficient on the ground, however. He also hauled in 44 catches for 311 yards and a touchdown in the receiving game.
“He kind of reminds me of Jonathon (Brooks) at times,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said of Wisner last year. “You don't get wowed by the size. I don't know if you get wowed by the outright speed, but there's just a natural feel that he finds his way through holes. He's tough to get on the ground. He's physical when he has to be physical. He has speed and he has real toughness, which are kind of prerequisites at the position.”
Wisner has not just the speed and agility to burst away from defenders, but he's also a powerful runner who can put his head down and power through defenders and break tackles.
