The Philadelphia Eagles saw countless defensive players leave in free agency after helping the team win their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
One of those players was veteran cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who signed a two-year, $11.045 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings. Philly fans weren’t happy to see Rodgers leave, who played well when the Eagles needed him in the regular season and playoffs.
The feeling is mutual for Rodgers, who was at the Roots Picnic Celebrity Basketball Game in Philadelphia this weekend, where he expressed his gratitude to the organization for giving him a second chance.
"I love Philly. They gave me a second chance at life. To take care of my family. I’ll never turn my back on Philly," Rodgers said to Jason Dumas of 6ABC.
The Eagles signed Rodgers on August 29, 2023, after he was suspended for violating the NFL’s gambling policy on June 28, 2023. Right after the NFL made its decision, the Indianapolis Colts parted ways with Rodgers a day later.
The veteran cornerback was on the shelf for the 2023 season, but was reinstated by the league last offseason, opening the door for him to play.
In 15 games with the Eagles, Rodgers recorded 26 combined tackles, four pass deflections, and a forced fumble. He also saw some time on special teams with eight kick return attempts.
Rodgers also appeared in all four of Philadelphia’s playoff games and made a huge play in the NFC divisional round against the Los Angeles Rams. In that snowy contest, Rodgers recovered a fumble at the start of the fourth quarter, which gave the Eagles’ offense great field position.
The former Eagles defensive back will get a chance to face his old team as Philadelphia will travel to the Twin Cities in Week 7. It will be fun to see Rodgers try to cover AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith.
