Manchester United eye £40m move for striker who loves Newcastle United

A former Newcastle United fans favourite could return to the Premier League this summer.

Former Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is linked with a surprise return to the Premier League.

Mitrovic first moved to England when he joined Newcastle from Anderlecht for £13million in July 2015. He quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite but struggled to impress then-manager Rafa Benitez, resulting in him joining Fulham.

The Serbian scored 17 goals, one of which came in the Tyne-Wear derby versus Sunderland, in 72 appearances for United before his move to Fulham in January 2018. An initial loan spell turned permanent the following summer for £22m after Mitrovic’s goals helped the Cottagers earn promotion from the Championship.

Although Fulham floated between the Premier League and Championship before finally establishing themselves in the top-flight in 2022-23, Mitrovic was a regular source of goals with 111 in 206 appearances.

It was in the summer of 2023 that Mitrovic opted to leave West London as he joined Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal for a club-record £50m. In his two seasons in the Middle East, the striker boasts an impressive record of 68 goals in 79 appearances.

Aleksandar Mitrovic wanted by Manchester United

The 30-year-old is due to take part in the Club World Cup, which starts on June 15, but could be sold if a replacement is found. And as per talkSPORT, Manchester United are considering a move after missing out on Liam Delap to Chelsea, while West Ham United and Everton are both monitoring the situation.

It’s claimed Mitrovic is valued around £40m and is prepared to take a pay cut in order to leave the Middle East.

Aleksandar Mitrovic ‘loves’ Newcastle United

Despite seeing his time at St James’ Park cut short after just two-and-a-half seasons, Mitrovic still has a strong affection for the club.

Speaking whilst he was still a Newcastle player, Mitrovic said: “This is the reason I came to this great club. It’s unbelievable, especially when you score here. My heart is full for this club. I couldn’t be happier when I score goals for these fans and this club.

“When you hear the whole stadium sing your name, it really is unbelievable. I have heard them sing ‘Mitro is on fire’ and it really is unbelievable. I have not felt like this for a long time.

“I had really good fans behind me at a really big club like Anderlecht and Partizan (Belgrade) as well, but here you get 52,000.

“When you were a boy you dream about things like this. I have scored goals for Partizan, Anderlecht and now here. All three clubs are amazing. But when 52000 people sing your name, you have to be on the pitch to feel this. It is unbelievable.”
