“Unhappy”Manchester United star paving way for Viktor Gyökeres transfer as Serie A deal advances

Rasmus Højlund is paving the way for Viktor Gyökeres to move to Manchester United this summer as a possible Serie A move advances.

Manchester United have kicked off the 2025 summer transfer window in style, announcing the imminent £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on day one of the window.

The 26-year-old Brazilian becomes Rúben Amorim’s first signing in what promises to be a thrilling summer at Old Trafford, with the club aiming to bring in up to six new first-team players while overseeing a number of departures.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia – all of whom spent the second half of last season out on loan – are set to be sold, while the futures of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund, and others remain uncertain.

Amorim is also eager to bolster his attack further, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo identified as a key target.

Højlund edging closer to Serie A transfer

Højlund netted just ten goals in all competitions this season despite playing 52 fixtures, starting in 38 of them.

This was six fewer than his 16-goal tally last season, with his two full seasons at Old Trafford coming at a time when he was heavily relied upon for goals.

With United wanting to sign a new striker this summer as Højlund is out of favour at the club amid his poor form, the Italian outlet Calciomercato has revealed that the player is advancing on a move to Inter Milan.

According to the report, the 22-year-old’s agent has established a good relationship with Serie A giants Inter Milan. With the Italian side seeking to sign two new attacking players this summer, the former Atalanta forward is a name they are considering.

Calciomercato further reports that Højlund is unhappy at United and intends to leave Old Trafford this summer to find a new environment to rebuild his career.

Højlund exit paves the way for Gyökeres

United’s current first-team striker options are Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee. However, the latter is seen as more of a rounded attacking player than an out-and-out No. 9.

17-year-old Academy striker Chido Obi is also working his way toward the first team, while Cunha is known to be able to play in the position as well.

So, if Højlund were to leave this summer, a new striker would become the club’s top priority, with Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyökeres the two most-linked players for the position.

However, a move for Osimhen only looks like a possibility if Højlund is involved as part of a player-plus-cash deal for the Nigerian international. So, if the Dane were to head to Inter this summer, this leaves United’s best and most likely striker signing as Gyökeres.

The Swedish international would be a coup signing for United, with the 26-year-old a favourite of Amorim after netting a stunning 66 goals in 68 appearances during their time together at Sporting CP.

Gyökeres is yet to play a minute in the Premier League but has previous experience in England, scoring 44 goals for Brighton, Swansea, and Coventry between 2020 and 2023. He would be a fantastic addition to Amorim’s squad in terms of goalscoring talent for the 2025/26 campaign.
