Yukinari Sugawara tipped to imitate ex-Barcelona defender's Championship heroics

Yukinari Sugawara should take inspiration from promotion-winner Junior Firpo, for his attacking contributions at Leeds this season.

Hours ago, Southampton fans must've got excited listening to the latest Junya Ito links. After all, having emerged as a superstar for Will Still at Reims, the playmaker can be an asset, both on and off the field to ease the manager's transition at St. Mary's.

But didn’t those rumours about Ito instantly remind you of his compatriot, Yukinari Sugawara? Especially, when after Walker-Peters' departure, Sugawara will be Southampton's definite starter under Still.

Granted, the 24-year-old’s debut season at St. Mary’s has been far from consistent or spectacular but this may all change for Sugawara in the new Will Still system. And what better for him than having a Championship inspiration to make this come true?

Interestingly, as per EFL Analysis, Sugawara may be Southampton's x-factor in their transitional attacks, a role perfected by Leeds full-back Junior Firpo this season.

To note, Firpo maxed out his abilities in Leeds' 2024/25 campaign as he emerged as a significant goalscoring threat despite being a left-back by trade. With 14 goal contributions, the former Barcelona man stood exceptional, as he smoothened Daniel Farke's Leeds promotion pathway.

Sugawara can turn into an instant hit under Will Still

Well, that's what Yukinari Sugawara can provide for Southampton as Will Still is tipped to employ a quick counter strategy that will extensively involve wing players like him.

Just imagine a system where rumoured star Junya Ito takes charge at the right wing with his Japanese teammate Sugawara assisting him from the back. Clearly, this duo's chemistry can light up the St. Mary's once again.

Till now, Sugawara is one of the very few who's certain to continue at Southampton next season. Well, that guarantees him an early mover advantage to impress Will Still and adapt to the manager's playstyle better.

Currently, this may come as an exaggeration, but Sugawara has the potential to emerge as an even bigger winner from Still's arrival than Ross Stewart. But will this happen? Only time and Still can tell.
