Buccaneers 3rd-Round Wideout Linked to AFC Contender

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers suddenly have an overflowing wealth of riches at the wide receiver position.

After the team selected former Ohio State Buckeyes wideout Emeka Egbuka with its first-round pick this year, general manager Jason Licht has built a stockpile of talent.

With several teams in need of either depth or a starter at receiver, it's no surprise that rumors have swirled about a possible trade of one of the bodies at wideout.

Zachary Smith of Around the 412 reported that the Steelers are interested in a trade to acquire Bucs wideout Trey Palmer.

"The Steelers have checked in with the Buccaneers regarding WR Trey Palmer. Palmer, a 6th-round pick in 2023, has 51/557/4 in his career," Smith reported.

Palmer was a sixth-round pick by the Bucs in the 2023 NFL Draft at No. 191 overall. The LSU and Nebraska product had an impressive rookie season with 39 catches for 385 yards and three touchdowns. But his playing time suffered after Tampa Bay drafted Jalen McMillan last season.

Palmer posted just 22 catches with 172 yards and one score while spending time on special teams returning punts.

The Buccaneers' wide receiver room is quite crowded, and someone could be the odd man out when the time comes for final roster cuts. If the Bucs don't think Palmer will make the 2025 squad, it's best to trade him now and get something rather than release him later for nothing.

The other side of the Bucs' coin is that Chris Godwin might not be ready for the start of the season after dislocating his ankle last year. The wideout depth is a luxury that not many teams enjoy.

It's another tough decision for Licht.
