Leeds United and Wrexham have been linked with Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson.
Wrexham are reportedly lining up a shock move for Newcastle United striker Callum Wison.
Three consecutive promotions have resulted in the Red Dragons rising from the National League to the Championship. Owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Robert McElhenney, heavy investment - and an award-winning documentary series - has created one of football’s most intriguing storylines in recent years.
However, the leap to the second tier is huge, with players earning, on average, £23,000 per week more than in League One. The likes of Leicester City, Southampton and Ipswich Town dropping from the Premier League also adds another financial hurdle.
Wrexham can sign Premier League quality
Wrexham are keen to bolster their ranks to ensure they can achieve an unprecedented four straight promotions. Various sources have suggested the Welsh club could make a move for out-of-sorts Toon striker Wilson.
His current deal is set to expire on June 30 but Newcastle are understood to have offered him a diminished, incentivised contract. Whether the 33-year-old accepts bit-part status or pursues first-team football elsewhere remains to be seen.
Newcastle United future looks bleak
Wilson failed to score a Premier League goal in 2024-25 and missed the middle chunk of the campaign through injury. Alexander Isak - valued at around £150million - has cemented himself as Newcastle’s main centre-forward in recent seasons.
Will Osula is emerging on the scene and there are noises that the Magpies could sign another No.9 ahead of the Champions League campaign. That would leave Wilson as surplus to requirements after five years of service at St James’ Park.

“In my absence over the last 18 months, Alex has just gone to another level which is fantastic for the team. It's helped us improve so much. Then obviously my role changes and you have to put your pride and ego to the side, put the team first and know what the team needs in that moment.
“If I can't be a big part on the pitch, what can you do off it? How can you help other players? How can you still be you without acting and being disappointed? It's difficult, but I think I'm getting the balance right.
“I've gone through dips and all sorts of emotions, especially being out of contract in the summer. There's a lot of emotions throughout this season that have been different challenges to face and new challenges that I've never faced before."
