£93m striker now has ‘universal backing’ at Arsenal, he could be Mikel Arteta’s new number nine - journalist

Arsenal are wasting very little time when it comes to recruiting a new striker for next season.

New sporting director Andrea Berta arrived at Arsenal with the intention of finding the right number nine for Mikel Arteta.

Berta immediately recognised that recruiting the right striker would be crucial for the Gunners, and he’s already made sure to leave no stone unturned.

Arsenal have scoured the market and it’s left them with two main options: Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko.

Arsenal tried to sign Sesko last summer, a striker who is clearly admired at the Emirates Stadium.

And whilst Sesko rejected Arsenal on that occasion, he’d be a lot more receptive to calls from north London this summer.

Benjamin Sesko is admired by everyone at Arsenal

That being said, BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel has provided an update on Arsenal’s search for a new striker in a Q&A.

Mokbel was asked whether Arsenal are more likely to sign Gyokeres or Sesko this summer, an answer he couldn’t currently give.

But the journalist did reveal that Sesko had ‘universal backing’ at Arsenal, a statement which felt fairly significant.

Mokbel said: “Sesko has near universal backing at the Emirates but, crucially, will be the more expensive deal.

“Gyokeres’ chances of moving to Arsenal have increased since Andrea Berta’s appointment as sporting director.

“Price is key here. Sesko ticks many boxes in terms of profile, he is younger than Gyokeres and plays in a stronger league (the Bundesliga) according to recruitment data.

“But some of the reported figures indicate he could cost £93million.

“Gyokeres is more economical, but would see the club divert from their longer-term strategy given Sesko has always been a target.”

Viktor Gyokeres isn’t the right striker for Arsenal

Of course, ‘Gyokeres or Sesko’ is now the question being asked by most Arsenal fans, and from the outside looking in, there appears to be a fairly simple answer.

Sesko is the right choice for Arsenal, even if he might cost slightly more than Gyokeres.

There are simply too many doubts about Gyokeres — does he fit Arsenal’s style of play? Can he make the step up from Portugal?

Two pretty important questions, and both will surely be a concern for decision-makers at Arsenal.

But when it comes to Sesko, the biggest drawbacks are simply his increased price and the fact that he’s not the finished article — he’s earlier in his career.

However, in terms of still having room to improve, that should only be seen as a positive for Arsenal, a player who Arteta can mould into one of Europe’s best.

And in terms of the 22-year-old’s price, Arsenal simply need to pay whatever it takes.
