Exclusive: Liverpool not giving up on Luis Diaz stay as Reds make push to fend off Saudi interest

Exclusive with Graeme Bailey.

Liverpool are not resigned to losing Luis Diaz this summer despite strong interest from Saudi Arabia, Rousing The Kop can exclusively reveal.

Diaz has had an excellent season for the Reds, contributing 13 goals as Liverpool won the Premier League title.

His good form has led to interest from Barcelona, who are understood to have long-standing interest in Diaz, while Saudi club Al Nassr have emerged as another candidate to sign him.

But despite suggestions that a departure may now be inevitable, RTK has been told that Liverpool are prioritising a push to keep Diaz at Anfield.

Liverpool are understood to have been pleased with the 28-year-old’s performances and are keen for him to stay at the club on fresh terms.

As a result, the Reds are currently engaged in discussions over a contract extension with Diaz’s representatives, with the outcome seen as being crucial to the Colombian’s immediate future.

Liverpool prioritising Luis Diaz talks

Diaz has delivered his best ever scoring return at Liverpool this season, stepping up to offer Arne Slot an option either through the middle or on the left of his attack.

And while his good form has seemingly accelerated interest from elsewhere, it has also reinforced Liverpool’s desire to keep him.

For Diaz’s part, he is understood to be happy to stay at Anfield, but is looking to be rewarded with a significant contract.

Diaz’s representatives have been pushing for a new deal for most of the past two years and a stay at Liverpool has by no means been ruled out.

Nevertheless, there is also an acceptance from Diaz and from Liverpool that if an agreement cannot be reached, the player may move on.

Despite Barcelona’s interest, it is understood that a move to Saudi Arabia would be the most likely outcome if Diaz does exit.

Liverpool would demand big money for Diaz

As Liverpool would prefer to keep Diaz this summer, they are likely to value the former Porto winger at between £60m and £70m.

Luis Diaz at Liverpool

This is seen as fair market value for a player at the peak of his powers with two years still remaining on his contract.

Such a fee would also allow Liverpool to reinvest in the transfer market, although RTK have been told it is not a guarantee that the Reds would look for an immediate replacement.

Given the Saudi transfer window does not officially open until July, there is still seen as being plenty of time for Liverpool to make their case to Diaz.

In the meantime, contract talks are also understood to be continuing over an extension for centre-back Ibrahima Konate.
