Paul Ince suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos should not overlook making a move for an experienced attacker for Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos both face major pressure to make a statement of intent in the summer transfer window after a woeful 2024-25 season for Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim faced an uphill task at Old Trafford last season after the 40-year-old former Sporting CP boss replaced Erik ten Hag in the dugout as United manager.

The United head coach now has the chance to begin a serious overhaul of the United first-team squad that he inherited from ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag in 2024.

However, Ineos will be limited in their spending power after United missed out on European football and will need to offload players to free up wages at the club.

Amorim received minimal support in the January transfer window, with United signing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and Ayden Heaven arriving from Arsenal.

Paul Ince dropped his transfer verdict on Ruben Amorim’s first-team Man Utd squad before the summer window opened

Manchester United have already stepped up in the summer transfer window and landed a key transfer for Ruben Amorim after the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Matheus Cunha had been linked with United in recent months and the Red Devils snapped up the 26-year-old Brazilian forward from Premier League side Wolves.

United triggered the £62.5m release clause in the Brazil international’s Wolves contract and Matheus Cunha has become Amorim’s first major signing this summer.

Amorim is expected to receive further reinforcements before the start of the 2025-26 season, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos needing to heavily back the United manager.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Paul Ince has insisted that United should be looking to sign a player like England striker Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.

“If you picked your best 11 players from the Premier League, you wouldn’t have one United player in there,” he said.

“And you probably could have said that in the last six or seven years. How can Liverpool go and sign the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, and Arsenal get Declan Rice?

“Why haven’t United been in the market for them? Are they looking in the right places? I don’t think they are right now, so it’s a big summer for everyone involved at the club, that’s for sure.

“They badly need more firepower and I’m looking at someone like Ollie Watkins – a striker who can actually score goals – as a player United need to be going for.”

Paul Ince’s stance is clear on Man Utd’s summer transfer window for Ruben Amorim ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season

Ollie Watkins is under contract with Aston Villa until 2028 and the 29-year-old forward netted 17 times and registered 14 assists in 54 matches last season.

Amorim was left short of firepower in the final third last season, with neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee able to make a real impact as the leading striker.

Ince has now made it clear that the current transfer window will be “vital” for United due to how far away the Premier League club are from the top five in the league.

“But this summer is going to be vital because United are currently miles away from the top five in the Premier League,” he said.

United will not return to action until July for the start of their pre-season tour, with the Red Devils facing Leeds United in a friendly match on 19th July.
