Newcastle United have been handed potentially a major transfer blow after an update emerged about the future of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for Mbeumo over the last few months, and can now open talks to complete new signings after the transfer window opened on Sunday. Mbeumo is thought to be top of the club's shortlist Champions League football returns to St James' Park next season.
However, the Magpies would have known that they are not the only club showing an interest in signing Mbeumo. Now, a fresh update has emerged about the forward's future on just the second day of the transfer window.
The Athletic have reported that Mbeumo has decided to join Manchester United this summer. The report claims that the Red Devils are yet to agree a deal for Mbeumo, but the player apparently sees Old Trafford as his preferred destination with the two clubs expected to begin talks over a transfer.
Brentford are reported to value Mbeumo at around £60million this summer. The Cameroon international's contract at the Gtech Community Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2026, but the Bees do have the option of another year in the deal.
Mbeumo has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, as well as Newcastle, over the last few months.
The 25-year-old scored 20 goals and provided eight assists for Brentford in the Premier League last season. That form saw the forward finish fourth in the Golden Boot race, behind only Mohamed Salah (29), Alexander Isak (23) and Erling Haaland (22).
If Man United were to sign Mbeumo it remains to be seen where Eddie Howe's side would go next for an alternative. The transfer window will close on June 10 before reopening on June 16 for the rest of the summer.
