West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus has a £75 million release clause in his deal.
Newcastle United are believed to be considering a transfer move for West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus, should the Magpies’ attempts at bringing Brentford man Bryan Mbeumo to St James’ Park fall through.
The Bees forward is expected to exit the Gtech Community Stadium this summer with Thomas Frank appearing to place his star man in the shop window. Newcastle United are keen in pursuing a deal but aren’t the only Premier League club eyeing Mbeumo.
Should the competition for the winger prove too much for the Tyneside outfit, Football Insider claims that Newcastle United will look into a move for Kudus. The winger has a £75 million release clause in his deal but the outlet claims that the Magpies could strike a deal for a ‘discounted price’.
Newcastle United linked with Mohammed Kudus transfer
Kudus is a key man for Graham Potter at the London Stadium but endured somewhat of a disaster season last time out. The Ghanaian scored just five goals over a Premier League campaign whose most memorable moment was a foolish red card and consequential FA ban in the 4-1 defeat to Spurs.
Transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider: “Newcastle can afford a deal for Kudus. As it stands, Bryan Mbeumo is their top target for that right-sided forward position.
“Kudus is on their list and has admirers within the Newcastle hierarchy, and is somebody they feel could come in and strengthen their attacking options. He obviously has that release clause of around £75million, but I don’t think many Premier League clubs will be willing to pay that.
“Due to West Ham’s situation, his suitors feel they can get him for a cheaper fee. They’ll definitely be willing to listen to offers for the Ghana international. If Newcastle were to miss out on Mbeumo to Man United or somebody else, it would push Kudus further up their list of targets for the right-winger role. Kudus still feels he has a lot to offer on the European scene, he’s still only 24. If Newcastle come calling with Champions League football, it’s something he would be open to.”
It would be quite the move for Kudus after the underwhelming 2024/25 campaign, whose five goals was a significant turn in form from the 14 managed over the 2023/24 campaign. The Hammers paid £37 million to sign the player from Ajax in 2023. Newcastle United could offer him Champions League football.
Graham Potter on West Ham forward’s form
Speaking towards the end of the season, Potter confronted the player’s struggle for form and said: “I think Mo has had probably a season that, from his perspective, would be a little bit disappointing, not because of his lack of effort or anything like that, but sometimes these things happen.
“Speaking personally, he’s been great with us in terms of how he’s worked every day, fantastic. He has built his fitness up, built his condition up to the point where he can sustain things a lot better now.
“Football can go like that sometimes. You can have a little spell when it doesn’t quite happen for you in front of goal or your final pass just doesn’t quite get there. It doesn’t take much to turn that round.
“How he contributed, for example, against Arsenal in our win there, even though he didn’t score or assist, he was a top, top player in that game and massively helped us. So the numbers say something, but there’s also the [other] aspects of his performance that have been really, really good.”
