Manchester United have moved one step closer to clinching an important cash boost.
One of the big mistakes during the Erik ten Hag era was the failure to utilise the talents of Alvaro Fernandez.
But there was one positive baked into his £5 million sale to Benfica a year ago. Manchester United had the foresight to include a sell-on clause.
Real Madrid are very keen on a deal to re-sign the player they lost to Manchester United’s academy in 2020, and the Red Devils could land a big windfall.
Manchester United’s Fernandez funds moves closer, thanks to Samuel Dahl
Manchester United could earn between £17-20 million from the sell-on clause for Alvaro Fernandez, with Real Madrid set to pay in excess of £40 million.
That will be a welcome cash boost for Manchester United, and this has moved a step closer.
Benfica have struck an agreement to sign Fernandez’s replacement, snapping up left-back Samuel Dahl.
Fabrizio Romano reports Benfica have agreed a deal for £7 million to sign Dahl from Roma, providing them with cover for Fernandez’s departure.

Dahl spent the second half of last season on loan at Benfica, following the path Fernandez took in 2024 before becoming a starter.

Manchester United need cash boost
Manchester United need the additional funds to bolster the club’s summer spending plans.
With a deal for Matheus Cunha already agreed, United are now attempting to do a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
These two deals will essentially wipe out United’s transfer budget, leaving the club reliant on player sales.
United are in a strong position, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho all likely to bring in fees, along with potential sales of Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.
An extra £20 million via Alvaro Fernandez’s sell-on clause would do nicely. Every little helps.
