Fermin explains decision to drop out of Spain U21 squad

Barcelona star Fermin Lopez has explained his decision to drop out of the Spain Under-21 squad for this summer’s Euros.

Lopez had been named in the senior squad for the Nations League Finals and the U21s but will only play with Luis de la Fuente’s side.

The Barcelona midfielder has told Diario Sport that he simply needs a rest.

“I have been almost non-stop for two years and you have to listen to your body. I was excited at first, although in the end we have agreed on everything,” he said.

“I spoke with Santi Denia (U-21 coach) and he understood it perfectly. I appreciate the trust that it gave me together, I believe that we have made the right decision.”

Lopez says it was his idea to step away from the Under-21s and spoke about the physical and mental stress he has felt over recent seasons.

“Yes, I’ve been non-stop for two years and thinking about it, agreed with everyone, it was the best thing to do and that’s how it has been decided,” he added.

“[Mental aspect too?] Without a doubt, in the European Championship we spent 45 days concentrated in a hotel, with trips, training and in the end your head reaches the limit.”

Lopez is not the only Barca player to have felt the effects of a tough season. Robert Lewandowski also dropped out of Poland action, citing a need for a break.
