Newcastle United 'expected' to complete deal for £30m-rated star - personal terms already agreed

Newcastle United retain a strong interest in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is one of Newcastle United’s top transfer targets this summer - and one outlet expects a move to happen.

Trafford was set to sign for the Magpies in June last year, only for the plug to be pulled when it became apparent Nottingham Forest would demand the signing of Odysseas Vlachodimos in return for the PSR-satisfying swindle which saw Elliot Anderson move to the City Ground.

The 22-year-old agreed personal terms over a switch to St James’ Park and that “verbal pact is still valid” according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. However, Newcastle are aware that a deal is more difficult to do.

Newcastle United ‘expected’ to seal James Trafford deal

It comes after Trafford enjoyed a record-breaking campaign to help Burnley earn promotion from the Championship as runners-up. He kept 19 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals, including 12 consecutive clean sheets between December and March.

United had a free run at a player seen as the future England No.1 last summer, they don't this, with a steady queue of admirers forming. A transfer that was set to cost £20m has now increased towards the £30m mark.

Newcastle United’s goalkeeper situation

The same report suggests Nick Pope could depart should Trafford arrive, however NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies are keen to keep the 33-year-old. It would not be a surprise to see him, at least in the short-term, remain as number one when the 2025-26 Premier League season kicks off on the weekend of August 15.

Last month, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe described Pope as ‘one of the best shotstoppers he has worked with’ and has previously said that he makes saves that not many others can.

Howe said: “Yeah, it may seem funny to say that about a goalkeeper because that is obviously what they are there to do but I do think he’s one of the best shot stoppers I’ve had the privilege to work with,” Howe added.

“He has this ability to get his positioning right and he has long levers, big arms and legs that he manages to get touches on balls some other goalkeepers wouldn’t because of his size and stature.

“He is also very good from crosses and we are going to need that coming into this game, set plays and all the things Arsenal possess as big strengths.”

While there appears to be some degree of certainty on Pope’s future, the same can’t be said for Martin Dubravka or Vlachodimos. Dubravka signed a new contract in February but is second choice behind Pope, while Vlachodimos has made just one appearance since joining from Forest.
