'The time has come': Player breaks silence ahead of Newcastle transfer

Newcastle United’s transfer window has not got off to a brilliant start.

While Newcastle United look to be in a position to sign players again, actually doing so has proven difficult.

Indeed, Liam Delap chose to join Chelsea instead of Newcastle. On Monday, it was confirmed that Newcastle target Bryan Mbeumo wants to join Manchester United.

Clearly, the club have time to turn things around but it’s hardly been a productive start to the summer window.

One player who is set to arrive, however, is Antonio Cordero.

Malaga have confirmed Cordero is leaving upon the expiration of his contract and, now, the player himself has taken to social media.

On Monday, the teenager posted an emotional goodbye message on Instagram, and Newcastle are expected to confirm Cordero’s move shortly.

He confirmed that the time had come for him to leave, thanking supporters for playing their part in his journey.

The 18-year-old said he never wanted this day to come and hinted he wished the team had enjoyed a more successful season, with Malaga having only confirmed their safety in the Spanish second tier at a relatively late stage of the campaign.

Whether Antonio Cordero will play for Newcastle United

Cordero’s camp insist a decision on his immediate future hasn’t been made despite initial reports linking him with a loan move away from Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe has confirmed Cordero could get an opportunity at Newcastle, suggesting there is indeed a pathway for young players.

That’s true to an extent, with Lewis Miley emerging as a breakout star during the 2023/24 season.

However, expecting Cordero to make the step up from the Spanish second division to life in the Premier League feels ambitious at best.

Barcelona tried to sign Cordero, so there’s little doubt he looks an exciting talent. However, rushing him into action too soon may prove detrimental to his further development.
