Everton are in the running to sign Sunderland star Trai Hume.

The defender featured 44 times for the Black Cats in their promotion-winning Championship campaign.

The Blues are on the lookout for a new right-back, with Jake O’Brien, who is naturally a centre-back, featuring there for the majority of the campaign.

Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson are their other options, but the former only featured five times in the league this season, with injuries hitting both.

Everton set to join Hume race

The Friedkin Group are expected to back David Moyes in the summer transfer window as he looks to improve his squad.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth (2 June) has reported that Everton are interested in the Northern Ireland international star.

Sheth states that they will face competition from Wolves and several Spanish clubs for the 23-year-old, who is contracted at the Stadium of Light until 2027.

Regis Le Bris’ side have the option to extend his deal by another year, but he may decide that he wants to leave instead.

Moyes set for huge overhaul this summer

The Scotsman is set to completely overhaul his squad ahead of the new season, and Hume would likely be just one of several signings.

The Blues are after a new midfielder, with Rangers star Mohamed Diomande, the latest to be linked with a move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Hume’s stats this season in the league.

An attacker is also on the agenda, after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto notched a total of 11 league goals in a dismal season in front of the goal.

Defence may be the least priority of all positions, given that the Toffees conceded the fourth-fewest goals with just 44, which was only bettered by Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

However, Hume would be a brilliant signing, as he is a modern full-back and can contribute on both sides of the game.

He is a solid defender and can also thrive in attacking areas, notching three goals and six assists in the second tier last season.

If the Blues can beat their rivals for his signature, it would be a great start to the window.
