Leeds are doing all they can to keep Junior Firpo this summer, but it may not be that easy.

The left-back enjoyed a brilliant personal campaign as Daniel Farke‘s side secured promotion to the Premier League from the Championship.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at Elland Road, but there is plenty of interest in his services from abroad, despite Leeds offering a new deal.

Real Betis were the frontrunners for his signature, but others may have now taken the advantage in the race for Firpo.

It seems like Firpo is destined to depart the LS11 outfit, despite being a crucial player in their promotion to the Premier League, as the Whites are ambushed.

Santi Arouna has reported that Lyon are pushing to reach an agreement with the Dominican star, and are in pole position to get it done.

It states that the French club’s hierarchy have prioritised Firpo’s signing but face stiff competition from Italian giants AC Milan.

Leeds will struggle to replace Firpo’s impact

Firpo contributed four goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances in the second tier, and it would be a huge blow to lose his services.

However, given the level of interest in him, it seems increasingly unlikely that the newly promoted side will be able to retain him.

The Dominican full-back would leave a major gap in Farke’s side if he were to depart, and it would be another area that the recruitment team would have to address.

The Peacocks are already in the market for several positions, with striker a high priority, with the likes of Callum Wilson and Davie Selke linked with moves.

Goalkeeper is another major area of need, with Caoimhin Kelleher and Nick Pope emerging as targets, although the former looks set to move to Brentford.

In terms of left-back, Liverpool star Kostas Tsimikas has been linked, but there are question marks as to whether he would be an upgrade on the dynamic nature of Firpo.

If the ex-Barcelona star ends up leaving, then a replacement that is definitely better must be secured, otherwise it could increase Leeds’ struggles next season.
