WREXHAM legend Joey Jones was in great spirits when he was reunited with one of the most famous banner's in Liverpool's history.
Jones has had a short spell at The Maelor hospital in the city and was greeted by surprise visitors - Dave Fairclough, Mike Berry, Gerry Downey and Hannah Downey - as well as the the 24-foot banner made to honour the former Wales international ahead of the 1977 European Cup final in Rome.
The 70-year-old was thrilled reminiscing with Fairclough about their time together at Anfield, and all their achievements and team-mates.
He was also delighted to meet the daughter of Phil Downey who was one of the originators of the magnificent banner when he became the first Welshman to lift the prestigious European Cup - the first of six won by Liverpool.
Fairclough said: "Joey was on top form and it was great to chat about our LFC days. He still hasn’t lost his wicked sense of humour and is still as humble as ever.
"It was such a great pleasure to share his company again.
Gerry Downey - Phil’s cousin - was thrilled to meet his hero and told Jones that he was one of the banner pole bearers at the Rome final.
Hannah Downey - Phil’s daughter - was also delighted to meet her father's hero and hear Jones confirm that he valued the banner even more than his medal!
"To see Joey’s face light up when we unfurled the banner was priceless and he was for once lost for words," said Mike Berry, Jones' cousin.
The banner will live long in Liverpool's history and is a great credit to the late Phil Downey and Jimmy Cummings who captured an iconic moment forever more in tribute to a true LFC KOP Legend."
