Manchester United are looking at reinforcing their squad this summer, having already signed Matheus Cunha to their ranks for next season.

Adding to their strength, Ruben Amorim is also looking set to retain his strongest player, with Bruno Fernandes rejecting a mega-money move to Al-Hilal.

As such, the United recruitment team don’t need to be looking to place the club’s captain, meaning they can focus on their other priority roles.

Coming into the summer, the two main positions which looked to need reinforcing was in the goalkeeper and striker departments, with Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana failing to provide the performances expected of a first-choice player in those roles.

However, The Athletic has now reported that these roles are further down the priority list.

Ruben Amorim sets out his key priorities for summer transfer window

Whilst the goalkeeper role is still one being monitored by the club, the report explains that a signing to the position is more likely to come into play should Onana leave the club.

The report sets out that United are in fact prioritising the recruitment of an athletic No.8-type midfielder to lead in the middle of the pitch, whilst another wing-back is also on the cards.

United signed Patrick Dorgu in the winter transfer window, and whilst he holds real potential for the future, he still has more area for development before being a regular starter.

As such, a new left-wing-back, especially a more experienced one, would bring instant impact to the squad whilst also giving Dorgu someone to learn from.

With their No.8 role, Manuel Ugarte was signed last summer, however has failed to have a consistent impact in his debut season, and Kobbie Mainoo seems to be struggling to find his place under Amorim.

As such, it’s no real surprise that United are looking to recruit to this role, with it still being at least a season or two until academy graduates Sekou Kone or Toby Collyer have a real chance of stepping into the role.
