Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for around £100m.

The Saudi club are reportedly willing to pay £100m to sign Fernandes, offering the midfielder a huge £700,000 per week wage. However, Fabrizio Romano has now provided a new update.

Fabrizio Romano says Bruno Fernandes will reject Saudi move

Fernandes reportedly wants to stay in the top level of European football, and so has rejected a move to Al-Hilal, meaning it looks as though Man United will keep their captain for the foreseeable future.

According to Fabrizio Romano on X: “Bruno Fernandes has REJECTED Al Hilal proposal. Despite crazy contract proposal from the Saudi Pro League club, Bruno Fernandes wants to continue playing football in Europe. Man United captain wants to play at top level in Europe. Decision made.”

This will come as a relief for Ruben Amorim, as Fernandes was one of the few bright sparks in the Man United manager’s side this season. He made 57 appearances for the Red Devils this season, scoring 19 goals and providing 19 assists.

The 30-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2027, meaning that United could be more keen to sell him next summer in order to cash in on him before his contract expires the following summer.

Bruno Fernandes may have to play out of position next season

Despite the fact that Fernandes’ goals and assist numbers have been impressive this season, it looks as though the United captain may have to drop into a deeper role based on Amorim’s transfer business so far this summer. Matheus Cunha will play in one of the number 10 roles that Amorim uses behind a main striker, and if they are to sign Bryan Mbeumo, that is where the Cameroon international would also fit in.

There were a couple of occasions where Fernandes played deeper this season, however, during those games, he struggled to make as much of an impact, with one of those games being the Europa League final defeat against Tottenham at the end of May.

So, if Man United do make a move for Mbeumo, Amorim could have some tricky lineup decisions assuming that Fernandes decides to stay at the club, and not move elsewhere this summer. However, seeing as Al-Hilal were set to offer £100m, it is unlikely that any European club would be able to send United a similar offer.
