Last night, The Athletic’s David Ornstein dropped an exclusive on Bryan Mbeumo’s future, revealing that the Brentford winger has named Man Utd are his preferred destination.

Sky Sports, The Telegraph, The Athletic and The Mail have all highlighted our interest in the 25-year-old over the past few months, so it does seem that we were serious about bringing the Cameroonian to St James’ Park.

However, we weren’t going to overpay and it seems money may have played a huge role once again.

According to [The Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-talks-targets-after-31774175), Bryan Mbeumo was demanding just shy of £200,000-per-week, meaning Newcastle would’ve had to make the winger their top earner to compete with Man Utd.

Lee Ryder reveals that Mbeumo’s agent told interested parties that the player wanted mor than quadruple the £45,000 wage he picks up at Brentford.

Man Utd agreed to that, with the Red Devils bowing down to the demands of players and agents, shown by their offer of £200,000-per-week to Wolves’ Matheus Cunha.

For context, Ryder reports that Newcastle’s highest earners like Bruno Guimaraes receive around £150,000-per-week.

While the club do nee to shell out more on wages soon enough to land top players, you can see we may have been reluctant to reach the £200,000 mark for Mbeumo, which could unsettle current players earning considerably less and set a precedent for future signings.

For a truly world class player, maybe Newcastle would push the boundaries and go to those figures, but is Mbeumo that man? He’s a very good player and Premier League proven, but it could create a problem down the line if we handed long and most lucrative contract yet to a player turning 26 soon.
