Liverpool reportedly proposed using Joe Gomez as a makeweight in a deal to sign Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon last summer, but the move never came to fruition after the Magpies demanded Quansah instead. Just 12 months later, the Reds may now feel that offloading the centre-back to bring in their top target is a worthy sacrifice – especially as Liverpool is in the market for defensive reinforcements already.
Slot is keen to bring in a new left-back and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has already agreed on personal terms with the club. Another centre-back is also in the offing, with Ibrahima Konate yet to put pen to paper on a contract extension on Merseyside and Gomez’s future still uncertain.
With further spending in mind, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool are willing to strike a player-plus-cash deal with Leverkusen with Wirtz and retain funds for other new signings.
