Chelsea have decided against making Jadon Sancho's loan deal from Manchester United permanent this summer, with the player due to return to Old Trafford ahead of the new season.
As part of the loan deal between the two clubs there was an obligation for Chelsea to make the deal permanent at the end of the season for a fee of up to £25 million. football.london understands Chelsea have opted against using that obligation.
It is said that negotiations over personal terms between Chelsea and Sancho have failed to result in an agreement. Chelsea will therefore pay a £5 million penalty to United with the player heading back to Old Trafford at the end of his loan deal on June 30.
Sancho will now start the search for another new club, with a future at United appearing to be highly unlikely. He is said to have options in both England and elsewhere in Europe.
The decision means that Sancho's final game as a Chelsea player came in the UEFA Conference League final. The winger came off the bench to score the team's third goal in the 4-1 win over Real Betis before going on to lift the trophy.
Following that match, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said that a decision would be made over Sancho's future.
“From now on is when we sit down with the club and decide about next year,” he told TNT Sports after the Conference League final of when a decision would be made.
“Jadon Sancho, if we finished fourth, it’s because of Jadon, if we won tonight it’s because of Jadon. It’s also because of Robert Sanchez — during the season, everyone is up and down a little bit, that’s part of the game.”
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Sancho made a total of 41 appearances in all competitions. He scored give goals and provided a further 10 assists as Chelsea finished in fourth place in the Premier League table.
