Stefan Borson: Wolves get Psr boost after big-money deal agreed

Wolves have agreed several big-money sales over the past couple of years to help them avoid breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The West Midlands side were believed to be close to the PSR limit for the 2023-24 financial year, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

The sales of Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves and Nathan Collins in the summer of 2023 helped get them over the line and avoid a potential breach.

Wolves moved their accounting deadline from 31 May to 30 June earlier this year, opening up the possibility for them to sell a player before they submit their accounts for 2024-25.

Manchester United have now agreed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha after activating the £62.5million release clause in his contract.

The deal is expected to be completed once the 26-year-old returns from international duty with Brazil later this month.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Wolves will have no PSR issues for 2024-25 after agreeing to sell Cunha.

The forward registered 17 goals and six assists in 36 appearances in the latest campaign.

Vitor Pereira’s side finished 16th in the Premier League table, one place below Man United.

Wolves points deduction update after deal agreed

Borson insisted Wolves were likely short on PSR before agreeing to sell Cunha.

He told Football Insider: “I think it all lines up, doesn’t it?

“I doubt they were very far short on PSR, but I suspect they were a little bit short because otherwise you probably wouldn’t move the accounting deadline and you’d just keep the profit from Cunha in next year for 2025-26.

“Now what they’re doing because they moved it to 30 June, I think it looks very clear that the deal is going to happen in their 2024-25 accounting year.

“It’s hard to think that that’s not about PSR. I think moving that date is a strong indicator, to be honest.

“We will sort of know because we’ll be able to model it out.

“Either way, the key point is that they have no issue with PSR.”

However, Galatasaray can offer the Portugal international Champions League football after being crowned Super Lig champions.
