Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho had spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea.

Chelsea have reached a final decision over the future of Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho after the player helped the club to a Europa Conference League win.

The 25-year-old made 41 appearances for the Blues last season, scoring five goals and picking up 10 assists. Sancho was a prominent figure under Maresca but never nailed down a place in the starting XI.

Sancho was on the scoresheet in the 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final last week, bagging a goal in a 29 minute cameo. His Premier League goals for the club came against Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town.

Chelsea make ‘brutal’ Jadon Sancho decision

It had been reported that Chelsea signed Sancho on a season-long loan deal last summer with the obligation to buy the player for £25 million come the end of the 2024/25 campaign. Sancho had been frozen out at Old Trafford by Erik ten Hag and was struggling for opportunities.

Chelsea did not pay an initial loan fee for the winger, which makes that agreement look more reasonable than a £5 million punishment for not signing the player. It has been confirmed on Tuesday that Chelsea will not sign Sancho permanently in a brutal decision given the player’s 2,426 minutes this season and the financial outlay to not have him on the books at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United to pocket £5 million from Chelsea transfer decision

Confirming the news on social media platform X, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote: “Jadon Sancho leaves Chelsea as there’s no agreement on personal terms.

“Chelsea will pay £5m penalty clause and Jadon returns to Manchester United, as @TheAthleticFC reports. Story over between Sancho and #CFC, now ready for new move in the summer window.”

Speaking about the player after Chelsea won the Europa Conference League, Blues manager Enzo Maresca said: “We are going to sit with the club and decide what happens for next year. If we finish fourth it is also because of Jadon, if we win tonight it is also because of Jadon. It is normal in a season to go a little bit up and down.”

When previously asked about the player’s future, Maresca had replied: “I don’t know. I said that when in the last weeks you asked me about different players, I always said the same. And the reason why is because it's the truth.

“It's not the moment, we have the final. Then in 24 hours, 48 hours, we're going to start to talk about the future. But at this moment, there is not any thought or any decision made on Jadon or any different players.”
