Contact made: Liverpool have upped their efforts to sign “phenomenal” £110m Diaz replacement

Liverpool have made contact with arguably one of the best wingers in European football currently, according to a new transfer claim.

The future of Luis Diaz is in doubt at Anfield, with the Colombian linked with moves to both Barcelona and the Saudi Pro League in recent days.

While the 28-year-old has proven to be a good player for Liverpool since joining from Porto in early 2022, there is still a feeling that he can be improved upon.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Sport Witness], the Reds have now made contact for AC Milan winger Rafael Leao in the “last few hours”.

That said, Liverpool will have spend £110m on the Portuguese if they want to sign him, with the Serie A giants no doubt reluctant to sell him.

A potentially sensational signing for Liverpool

Leao is among the best wide players in Europe, with the Italian journalist Riccardo Trevisani an enormous admirer, once saying;

“Guys, are you kidding me? You should take Leao’s last 4-5 matches with the national team and show them to an audience like a movie preview. You go to the cinema, and the first 15 minutes are the best highlights of Leao’s last four games for Portugal. It’s something unbelievably beautiful, even before he started doing great things again with Milan. For those saying he’s playing well because he was benched at Milan—no. Even during the October break, he had two phenomenal games with Portugal. So it’s not the bench that improved him; it’s Leao deciding to play football and play it well.”

Leao has been superb in a Milan shirt, scoring 70 goals and registering 62 assists in 260 appearances, with the 25-year-old also netting five times in 39 caps for Portugal.

Predominantly a left-sided attacking player, he would be an upgrade on Diaz, not to mention being three years younger than the Liverpool man.

An explosive player with the ability to glide past teammates, Leao also produced consistent levels of end product and has another gear to find in his career.

Liverpool should look at him as a fantastic option, although the main stumbling block is clearly the money, especially if they are about to spend a club-record sum on Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz.
