Chelsea are in talks to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan as they consider upgrading upon current first choice Robert Sanchez, according to reports.
Sanchez was installed as Chelsea’s number one at the start of the season by Enzo Maresca, but endured an error-strewn campaign that even saw him briefly dropped for Filip Jorgensen.
The Spaniard made five errors leading to goals in the Premier League, the joint-most of any player alongside Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric and Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen.
Such performances may have forced Chelsea to consider dipping into the transfer market to upgrade on Sanchez, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the club are keen on a move for French international Maignan.
The Milan shotstopper has just one year left on his contract with the Serie A club and is yet to agree terms on an extension.

The report adds that talks have begun with Milan who will weigh up whether or not to cash in on Maignan this summer after they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Maignan, who signed for Milan from Lille in 2021, lifted the Serie A title in his first season at the club and has gone on to make 163 appearances in all competitions for I Rossoneri.

Chelsea have not made signing a new keeper a priority in the summer window but a move for Maignan would be seen as a high-calibre upgrade. Burnley’s James Trafford is another player the club have enquired about.
As well as the aforementioned Sanchez and Jorgensen, the club also have Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders returning to Stamford Bridge this summer after their productive loans away from the club.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is also returning to Chelsea after his loan at Bournemouth, but the Spaniard is expected to move on this summer.
Maignan, meanwhile, has also previously attracted interest from Manchester United, who may now consider making a move for the Milan captain.
Ruben Amorim’s side are facing a major rebuild this summer, with current first-choice keeper Andre Onana one of several players who the club would consider selling.
United have already begun their summer transfer business with the signing of Matheus Cunha and appear primed to make further attacking reinforcements after Bryan Mbeumo signalled his desire to move to Old Trafford.
