Packers: Sean Mannion Should Be a Position Coach to Watch

The Green Bay Packers had to say goodbye to one of their longtime offensive assistants this offseason when quarterbacks coach Tom Clements announced his retirement.

That made way for the team to promote young Sean Mannion to the same role.

Sean Mannion Looks to Lead Jordan Love

At just 33 years of age and now in his second season with the Packers after playing in the NFL for nine years, Mannion has an interesting task ahead of him.

The former quarterback will look to help guide the Packers’ current franchise quarterback into the future as a true star.

While Mannion was in the building as an offensive assistant in 2024, he will have a lot more say in meeting rooms and on the field this season.

Of course, no position in all of sports is more important than the quarterback position, especially the one in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

While Love has already emerged as a franchise quarterback after learning from the likes of future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, head coach Matt LaFleur, and Clements, it will be up to Mannion to help him reach his full potential.

Sean Mannion’s Connection to Matt LaFleur

It is fascinating to think about why LaFleur decided to give Mannion his first coaching job at just 32 years of age.

Perhaps it goes back to their days together with the Los Angeles Rams during the 2017 season.

Mannion was drafted by the then-St. Louis Rams in 2015 out of Oregon State, which made way for him to connect with LaFleur, who was hired as the team’s co-offensive coordinator in 2017.

In that 2017 season, the Rams ended up winning 11 games and the NFC West.

LaFleur and Mannion formed a solid bond out in Hollywood during that season, which is part of the reason why the latter was brought to Green Bay before last season.

All in all, it will be interesting to see how Love plays in this first season with Mannion as his position coach.

Will he be a tougher mentor for him, like Clements was, or will he be more of a teammate who is in the role of a position coach?
