Packers: Why this former player should return

With his NFL-record (among tight ends) 20th season looming, Marcedes Lewis is still looking for his next team.

After apparently Facetiming with his former head coach in Green Bay, Matt LaFleur, recently, could there be a chance that Lewis ends up returning to Lambeau Field to play for the Packers this year?

What Did Marcedes Lewis and Matt LaFleur Chat About?

While speaking with host Kay Adams last week on Up & Adams, Lewis talked about a recent call he was on with LaFleur.

Here is what he had to say about it and whether or not he could wind up making a return to Lombardi Avenue:

“Matt is one of my best friends now. He FaceTimed me last week, and we were kind of talking about (Lewis re-signing with the Packers). It’s really out of his hands…I feel like it ended a little too soon in Green Bay.”

It would be fascinating if the former UCLA Bruin ended up coming back to play for the Packers after spending five seasons there (2018-2022).

Lewis has spent the past two seasons with the arch-rival Chicago Bears, and he, of course, spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2006-2017).

What Would the Role of Marcedes Lewis Be?

If Lewis were able to return to play for the Packers, which seemingly would be a decision for the front office to make, he would likely take on more of a leadership role.

That would be nothing new for the 41-year-old.

A former Pro-Bowl selection, Lewis has played in 272 career games, which is the most for a tight end in NFL history.

He has 437 career receptions for 5,115 yards and 40 touchdowns.

The best statistical season of his career came in 2010, which was that Pro Bowl season, when he caught a career-high 58 passes for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns.

With current Packers tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave being the starters, Lewis would likely either come in as an extra blocker because of his elite ability to run-block, or his 6’6″, 270-pound frame could prove to be useful down by the goal line.

In any case, if he were to sign back with the Packers, it would likely be a one-year, veteran minimum contract.
