Brentford are set to play hardball with Manchester United over a deal for Bryan Mbeumo after it emerged that the forward was keen on a move to Old Trafford.

United want to sign Mbeumo this summer and the 25-year-old is thought to prefer a move to the club rather than joining Newcastle, but a deal is yet to be agreed with Brentford.

Mbeumo has a year left on his existing contract, but the Bees have the option of another 12 months and although they have accepted a departure is likely this summer, they are still set to demand a substantial fee for the versatile attacker, with talks between the two clubs set to begin.

United have already agreed a deal with Wolves to sign Matheus Cunha, exercising his £62.5million release clause, and have now turned their attentions to Mbeumo, who scored 20 Premier League goals from the right wing last season.

The Cameroon international has spent six years at Brentford but has come of age in the last two campaigns, scoring 29 goals and registering 14 assists in the Premier League in that time.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has already given suitors an insight into his club's mentality when it comes to selling Mbeumo this summer, pointing out his return in front of goals, his work rate and his personality as reasons for why interested parties will have to pay a premium to do a deal.

“It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount,” Frank said. “It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot.

"How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player.”

United's interest in Mbeumo isn't linked to speculation over the future of captain Bruno Fernandes, who has turned down interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
