Scholes backs struggling Man United star amid exit links, shares how he can improve

Striker Rasmus Hojlund has failed to deliver since joining Manchester United from Atalanta in the summer of 2023.

He scored 16 goals in his first season at United and was only able to notch 10 goals across all competitions last term.

Due to his struggles, United are already exploring the market for a new striker. They had attempted to sign England youth international Liam Delap, but he chose to join Chelsea instead.

Hojlund may also consider leaving United. Italian side Inter Milan have contacted his camp about a move to the club in recent days.

However, former England international Paul Scholes has urged the Red Devils to keep Hojlund and revealed how they could get the best out of him.

He told the Overlap: “I would keep Hojlund. I know he has not been great, but he is a 22-year-old kid who has been asked to play centre-forward for Man United on his own for the last two years.

“He has had to play every week. He is the only one there. He is a 22-year-old kid. With the way they play, Man United should have at least three top centre-forwards, and I would bring him into that.

“Get (Victor) Osimhen and (Viktor) Gyokeres. Hojlund has struggled like mad of late especially, but he has not got the chance to sit down and watch.

“If a striker is not doing well, no confidence, the manager sits you down and says, ‘have a look, get a bit of hunger back, a bit of feeling back for the game’.

“We all know he has got centre-foward qualities, we have seen it. Not enough, I know that, but if he has got experience around him…

“Say he had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke around him, it would bring him on so much. He has been absolutely flogged to death.

“People forget how old he is. A lot of it is confidence.”

United cannot afford to have three senior strikers at the moment, making Scholes’ suggestion impracticable.

The Mancunian giants are operating on a tight budget due to a lack of European football and are reportedly prepared to slash their playing squad.

Hojlund has failed to convince in his two seasons at Old Trafford, and the Red Devils should sell him this summer if they receive the right offer.

His departure would facilitate a move for Gyokeres or Osimhen, either of whom could help change the club’s fortunes.
