Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have reportedly held initial talks to sign Liverpool attacking mainstay Luis Diaz in the summer transfer window.
Barcelona did a domestic double and made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in Hansi Flick’s first season in charge. While it was an exceptional campaign for them, Flick is looking for ways to further bolster his squad.
The German tactician wants more firepower in attack and according to Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz is their priority target for the summer. The Catalan giants have already started working towards a potential deal, and they have held initial talks with the Merseyside club.
Diaz made a name for himself at FC Porto before joining the Reds at the start of 2022 in a deal worth €45 million. The South American attacker has only gone from strength to strength since, and he has been a key figure in the team over the years.
The Colombian international was ever-present in Arne Slot’s team in the 2024/25 season. He was involved in a total of 50 matches across competitions and ended up contributing towards 25 goals (17 goals, 8 assists). Luis Diaz played a big part in their Premier League triumph.
While the player still has two years left on his deal at Anfield, his future has been a massive talking point in recent weeks. Reports earlier suggested that he was ready to extend his stay at the club as long as his wage demands were met. However, it seems Diaz is open to a move away from the club amidst interest from Spain and the Middle East.
Barcelona make moves to sign Diaz
Luis Diaz is not really keen on joining the Saudi Pro League, but he is certainly attracted by the idea of playing for Barcelona. The Catalan giants are also quite keen on signing him, and their sporting director, Deco is the one leading the charge from their end.
The newly crowned La Liga champions want more options on the left flank. They want someone who can compete with Raphinha for a place in the XI, and Diaz is considered an ideal fit. They view the Liverpool winger as a top target for the summer and have already initiated talks to bring him to Barcelona.
While signing the 28-year-old won’t be that straightforward because of the high initial cost and their ongoing issues with player registration, the Catalan giants are still working hard to figure out a way. They have held initial talks regarding a potential transfer, and it will be interesting to see how things pan out from here on.
