International prospect Ivan Kharchenkov has been linked with Tommy Lloyd and Arizona men's basketball. It seems the 6'7 wing is about to sign with Arizona. How can the Bayern Munich product help Arizona in 2025-26?
A Bayern Munich wing and one of the most highly sought after international talents, 18-year-old Ivan Kharchenkov, has reportedly committed to the University of Arizona. First reported by Eurohopes on X, Kharchenkov instantly becomes one of the most exciting talents on next season’s roster, alongside a plethora of exciting platers. The German product has a high-level balanced skillset that profiles as an impact player at the Big 12 level. Did Tommy Lloyd find a diamond in the rough for his Arizona Wildcats?
Prospect Profile Ivan Kharchenkov
Offensive Skillset
Part of what made teams like Arizona and North Carolina interested in Kharchenkov’s skillset is his deep offensive bag. He can score from the mid-range, is proficient and entertaining when driving hard to the rim, and has a great foundation on his perimeter jump shot with a repeatable motion. The mid-range has become a forgotten art but clearly not in Germany as the Bayern Munich prospect has a consistent floater that he uses against drop coverages.
Kharchenkov’s shooting efficiency stats leave a lot to be desired and his overall production at Bayern Munich was underwhelming (5.7 points on 63.9% 2FG, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in 33 appearances) but with the mechanical foundation he has and the role he’s expected to play, it is reasonable to say his efficiency could improve with guidance and a more select shot diet.
Kharchenkov excels at getting to the rim using his broad and bulky 6’7″, 200-plus pound frame to bully and shift the defense. His first step is not the fastest but his body control is top notch and it allows him to be in the right position to finish his shot more often than not. When he does finish around the rim, expect variety. He played shooting guard many times overseas and looks comfortable when finishing around the rim. Right handed, left handed, up and under, reverse layups… Kharchenkov has them all in his bag.
He puts his finishing skills to use in transition very often. Kharchenkov looks like a pro in transition at times, flowing with whatever the defense is giving him and his teammates. Creative finishes, physical finishes, slick passes are all things that can be seen in his highlight tape. Tommy Lloyd is known to love good transition basketball and Kharchenkov is a player at the wing position that can facilitate a transition bucket as needed.
The main question marks surrounding his offensive game as of right now seem to be his lack of burst when trying to take defenders off the dribble. At Arizona however, with the star-studded 2025 roster that Kharchenkov is set to join, it is likely he will not often be tasked with being an isolation ball handler, somewhat masking this deficiency.
Defensive Skillset
The size, strength, verticality, and IQ that Kharchenkov possesses should put him in a position to be, at minimum, a serviceable defender as a freshman in Tucson. Questions about his lateral quickness exist, however his recovery capabilities are showcased through multiple highlight-reel blocks and pick-pocket steals. The way he navigates screens and fights to stay in front of defenders provide hope that those questions are just that and not a cause for concern. Kharchenkov profiles as being an impactful two-way player once he gets comfortable at the college level.
He seems to get many of his steals when pressing and pressuring a ball-handler, then using his quick hands to poke the ball free. The on-ball pressure portion of his defensive skillset may be the most impressive part. His physicality also permits him to fight through screens consistently and deal with slightly bigger offensive opponents.
Tommy Lloyd’s defensive scheme at Arizona features lots of switching and takes a high energy and IQ player to run, Kharchenkov figures to fit seamlessly into that scheme. His attention to his assignment, as well as his tenacity when making sure he’s in front of his matchup, standout in the tape.
Is He The “Perfect SF Prototype” For Tommy Lloyd?
If Arizona fans are looking for a prototype or comparison for Ivan, it’s Pelle Larsson. Kharchenkov looks to be a more physical player with a higher ceiling, but in terms of usage and play style, Larsson’s production at Arizona could be the ideal blueprint. While it is yet to be seen if Kharchenkov can remain in the high graces of pro scouts or if he will be a multiple-year project in Tucson, the way Lloyd used Larsson could be indicative of how you may see Kharchenkov used next season.
Both Larsson, who now plays in the NBA for the Miami Heat, and Kharchenkov are players who have high basketball IQ, can knock down spot-up shots, use their body control to get high percentage looks, are very active off ball, and have a high motor on defense. Tommy Lloyd must feel like he has struck gold with this prospect for Arizona.

Will He Start At ARizona?
While Kharchenkov has a balanced, high-level, and intuitive skillset, don’t be surprised to see him coming off the bench next season even if his game translates from overseas. Lloyd proved last season with his management of Anthony Dell’Orso and Carter Bryant that he values experience and age over ceiling and potential. The starting small forward role is Dell’Orso’s spot to lose and if Kharchenkov’s game carries over into the Big 12, many Wildcat fans will likely be clamoring for his name to enter the starting five.
Dwayne Aristode will also have his hat in the ring for the starting three position for Lloyd. The 247 composite 5-star recruit stands at 6’8″ and 200-plus pounds and profiles to be a high-level defensive stopper next season at Arizona. Prior to this signing, fans were already saying Aristode is the most underrated player in this class and that stance may have just solidified with the hype surrounding the newest Wildcat commit.
Fun Fact
Here’s a fun fact for making it to the end of the article! Ivan’s father is a successful hooper himself! His father, Alexander Kharchenkov played 22 professional seasons for CSKA Moscow, Dinamo Moscow and Spartak St. Petersburg. The elder Kharchenkov was also apart of the Soviet Union team won the title at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 1974.
